Itasca Promotes Cave Mining Solutions at Caving 2014
Itasca Promotes Block, Panel and Sublevel Caving at Caving 2014 — the 3rd International Symposium on Block and Sublevel Caving
The Itasca International offices in Santiago, Chile and Minneapolis, MN co-sponsored the 3rd International Symposium on Block and Sublevel Caving, Caving 2014, in Santiago de Chile, from June 4-6, 2014. This is the third of a series of symposia dedicated to Cave Mining and follows the first symposium held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2007 and the second, held in Perth, Australia in 2010.
The subject chosen for Caving 2014 was “Projects for Today and the Future”. This was selected because in many countries, and in particular in Chile, mining is not only adding value to the present economy, but is also building the infrastructure for the next 25 years of production.
While Itasca’s Santiago office directed exhibit participation, Minneapolis engineer Matthew Pierce was a member of the Technical Committee, and also chaired the session on Gravity Flow. The Minneapolis office also contributed two papers to the conference: “A 3DEC - FLAC3D Model to Predict Primary Fragmentation Distribution in Cave Mines”, by Tryana Garza-Cruz and “Application of a Methodology for Secondary Fragmentation Prediction in Cave Mines”, by Miguel Fuenzalida. These papers generated significant interest from the attendants, estimated above 250 people from the cave mining industry worldwide.
