FLAC3D TM is a numerical modeling code for advanced geotechnical analysis of soil, rock,

and structural support in three dimensions. FLAC3D is used in analysis, testing, and

design by geotechnical, civil, and mining engineers. It is designed to accommodate any

kind of geotechnical engineering project where continuum analysis is necessary.

The training course provides hands-on learning of the FLAC3D modelling code software

used internationally by companies and research organisations.

This FLAC3D V7.0 training course accommodates new and experienced users. It will be

mainly based on examples that attendees will develop and run by themselves to better

grasp the mechanics of using FLAC3D V7.0, the key underlying calculation principles and

the spectrum of available features. Attendees are encouraged to bring one of their specific

cases that may be discussed.

L O C A T I O N

The training course will be held at Itasca’s UK office in Shrewsbury, a short walk from the town centre and many fine hotels, bars and restaurants.

Shrewsbury is within 1hr 30min drive from Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool airports and has frequent rail links to all major UK cities.

M A T E R I A L S

Each participant is encouraged to bring his or her own laptop computer (Windows system). Otherwise computers will be available at a fee of £50.00.

Participants are urged to install the latest release of the software prior to class.

I N S T R U C T O R

Dr. Camusso is a civil engineer with over seven years of experience in geotechnical and rock mechanics. Most of Dr. Camusso’s numerical modelling expertise comes

from using Itasca's FLAC and FLAC3D codes.

Day1:

Introduction to FLAC3D

 General description

Overview of potential applications and capabilities in geoanalysis

and design

FLAC3D theoretical background

Explicit Finite-Difference solution & Numerical Analysis of

nonlinear continua

 Demonstration of an explicit dynamic solution

FLAC3D operation

Installation, Files, manuals, Help, Nomenclature, sign

convention, system of units and general modelling workflow

routine

 Introduction to the FLAC3D user interface

 Grid Generation & Model Pane

Day 2:

Recommended Solution Procedure

 Applying Boundary and Initial Conditions, Assigning Material Models

and Properties, Solving to equilibrium, Monitoring model response,

checking solution & producing results

 CAD-based model generation with FLAC3D

Using geometric data & Using Rhino

Day 3:

 Overview of FLAC3D’s fluid flow logic Including groundwater flow,

soil rock structure interaction and structural elements in FLAC3D.

 General questions and Modelling reccomendations
