Solving Seismic/Liquefaction Problems Using FLAC and FLAC3D
**A dynamic model of a pulse wave – originating from a tunnel.
Itasca is offering a focused training session with instruction by experienced engineering consultants, hands-on modeling exercises, and open discussion with other attendees regarding best practices.
This course is best suited for someone with basic knowledge of FLAC or FLAC3D.
NOTE: To assure you get the most out of these three days, we will supply you with training information and exercises upon your registration. New users or those needing a refresher before attending will benefit by reviewing this material in advance of the course.
Topics to be covered during the course include:
Dynamic Modeling using FLAC/FLAC3D
- Best practices for dynamic modeling

- Dynamic Boundary conditions (Quiet vs Free-field)
- Ground Motion Processing
- Accounting for inertial effect of water

- Basics of Liquefaction
- Finn-Byrne model

- Examples: Evaluation of liquefaction remediation options using 3D analyses
This is a “hands-on” training. Each attendee should have a laptop with administrative rights. A temporary USB license key will be provided to each attendee for use during training.
Lunch will be provided each day.

Mr. Augusto Lucarelli has a background in soil mechanics, numerical modeling of geotechnical processes, shallow and deep foundation design, soil improvement, slope stability, mechanized excavation, conventional tunneling in urban areas, deep excavation and support structures in difficult environments. He has numerical software experience in FLAC, FLAC3D, UDEC, Plaxis2D, Plaxis3D Foundations, Plaxis3D Tunnel, Excel and Excel VBA programming and Autocad.
Dr. Zorica Radaković-Guzina's research has focused on the areas of structural dynamics, non-destructive characterization of concrete, damage mechanics, and wave propagation. She is responsible for FORTRAN and C/C++ programming development and support for Itasca's FLAC and FLAC3D software, and she assists with the development and testing of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Itasca codes.
Dr. Varun is a geotechnical engineer with specialization in earthquake engineering and soil dynamics. He has experience with analytical and numerical modeling and has been involved with projects related to seismic hazard mitigation for waterfront structures, dynamic response of foundations, site response and soil-structure interaction.
