PFC Software Licenses
The term PFC refers to both PFC2D and PFC3D numerical modeling software in two and three dimensions, respectively. PFC is available as PFC Suite or PFC2D.
PFC Suite bundles both PFC3D and PFC2D programs together. The advantage of PFC Suite is that you can start learning how to use PFC and begin your initial investigations right away. Switching between PFC2D and PFC3D for more advanced research or design modeling is straightforward, as their interface, commands, and scripting are virtually identical.
PFC2D has essentially the same features, functionality, and options (thermal and UDM) as PFC3D and is available at a substantial cost saving. It is well suited for preliminary modeling to quickly set up simulations and examine model parameters with faster turnaround. PFC2D is also an excellent teaching platform.
The license is effective in perpetuity for the software version purchased.
Please note that Itasca has decided to discontinue the Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP) first implemented with PFC 5.0. This means that all PFC 5.0 AMP licenses that are current will become perpetual licenses going forward. In conjunction with this, Itasca has reduced the cost of the commercial version of PFC.
The license is effective for one year from the date of purchase for the currently available software version.
Standard PFC software is a stand-alone, single-user program. The standard type will allow two instances of PFC to cycle simultaneously on a single computer. However, there is no limit to the number of instances that may be open without cycling. This allows an unrestricted amount of model setup or analysis. The program is secured with a USB key that must be connected to a computer to allow cycling. The USB security key may be moved between computers and users as needed. This option is ideal for an individual or for multiple users utilizing the software within the same office.
Network PFC software will cycle a number of PFC instances equal to the number of seats purchased for the license. In this configuration, the USB security key and license management software are installed on a server while the PFC program is installed on end-user computers. The program may be installed on as many computers as needed. This license is ideal for a centralized, IT- administered organization.
If PFC is started without the key for either a standard or network license, the Hardware Lock Not Detected error dialog will appear. When no key is present, the dialog provides the option to start the program in "Demonstration Mode" by choosing the Continue button. This mode is fully functional in every respect, except the program will only cycle models limited to 1,000 balls, 1,000 clumps, and 10 fractures. There are no time restrictions in Demonstration Mode. Efforts to cycle larger models will generate an error message indicating that the model size exceeds that which may be cycled in "Demonstration Mode."
