Meshing Solutions

Itasca’s geotechnical continuum numerical software require the model domain of interest to be discretized into zones or blocks (triangles and quaderlaterals (quads) for FLAC, FLAC/Slope and UDEC and hexahedral (hex), tetrahedral (tet), prisms, pyramids for 3DEC and FLAC3D). All Itasca software have built-in meshing tools that allow you to mesh simple and somewhat complex geometry relatively quickly. As geometry increases in complexity, 3D meshing becomes increasingly challenging using the built-in tools. For meshing complex geometry, Itasca offers two powerful CAD-based meshing products: Griddle and BlockRanger. These software can create high-quality tetrahedral and hex-dominant meshes for FLAC3D, 3DEC, and other common engineering mesh formats.

Griddle is a fully interactive, general-purpose, surface remesher, and volume mesh generation plug-in for the Rhinoceros 5.0 3D CAD software. Griddle can be used to remesh Rhino surface meshes to comply with your precise size specifications and type (triangle or quad-dominant). Surface meshes can then be used as boundaries for Griddle’s volume mesher which produces tetrahedral or hex-dominant meshes.

BlockRanger is a fully interactive, volume mesh generation plug-in for the Rhinoceros 5.0 3D CAD system.  BlockRanger converts Rhino 5 solids into blocks of high-quality hexahedral (brick) elements for use with most engineering analysis packages that require hexahedral meshing and a strict control of element quality, spatial distribution and orientation.
