New Interactive Modeling in FLAC3D 6.0

The Model Pane is a special working area with interactive tools for model manipulation.  Unlike a plot view, which is a visual representation only of a model state, in the Model Pane you can interactively select, filter, and show/hide model objects in the process of targeting them for subsequent commands.

Object Selection

  • View, select, and operate on zones and zone faces
  • Use the mouse and keyboard to hide (Shift) zones by color or make multiple selections (Ctrl)
  • Use a plane defined by a break angle to make zone face selection on simple or complex surfaces easy
  • Visual and property-based range tools may now be used to select zones and faces
    • Visual: Rectangle, Polygon, Elipse X-, Y-, or Z-position, Sphere, and Annulus
    • Property-based: ID, ID List, Group, Extra, Extra-List, Orientation, CModel (zone constitutive model), Interface, Surface, and STRUCT (structural element) Type
  • Hide/show, delete, recolor, and group zones and faces
  • Densify zones (multiplying the number of zones) in a region
  • Add 2D Structural Elements
  • Create geometric data directly from zone faces

Grouping

  • By default, all model blocks or primitives are automatically assigned an initial unique group name by Block ID
  • Automatic skinning tool will automatically name both internal and external boundaries via a break-angle setting
  • Disambiguate tool allows you to discover all groups associated with a zone or face, making it easy to select the desired group in cases where a given object may have multiple group assignments
  • Group slots can now be named as well as numbered

Apply Logic and Boundary Conditions

Since it simple to select and reference surfaces in the Model Pane, the APPLY logic and boundary conditions are much easier to work with. In addition, the APPLY logic has been completely rewritten to be more automatic and for improved plotting.

  • Easier local system velocity boundary conditions
  • Relax excavations automatically
  • Added the Westergaard approximation (i.e., hydrodynamic water pressure represented by a parabola) for dynamic analysis with water. This approach is widely used for preliminary calculations of the hydrodynamic pressure on dams and spillway gates (USDOI, 2011)
  • Locally applied FISH multipliers – vary APPLY commands in space and time
