Announcement
Itasca will host the first-ever FLAC/DEM Conference on August 25-27, 2008 in Minneapolis. The conference will feature topics and discussions covering the spectrum of Itasca software: FLAC, FLAC3D, UDEC, 3DEC, PFC2D, and PFC3D. Where past Itasca-sponsored conferences have limited their scope to a single 2D/3D code pair, this conference, in considering all the codes, will offer a complete look at the state of numerical modeling with Itasca software.
Organized by
Itasca Consulting Group, Inc. Dr. Christine Detournay, Dr. Roger Hart and Ms. Michele Nelson

Author Instructions
Beginning July 16, 2007 abstract authors will be notified of whether or not their full papers have been accepted. If you do not receive this notice by the end of July, please contact Michele Nelson (mnelson@itascacg.com) at Itasca Consulting Group, Inc.
Authors can find instructions and templates for paper preparation in the below zip file. Please note:
- Papers should be delivered via email (in Word format ONLY) to Michele Nelson (mnelson@itascacg.com)
- the deadline for submission of papers is November 15, 2007
- the maximum number of pages per paper is eight (8)
- a completed Consent to Publish form must accompany your paper
- figures and/or photographs should be embedded into your Word document and also provided as separate files with a preferred format of TIFF or EPS
- please ensure that your paper follows the formatting instructions provided and check that all print is clear, especially in charts and graphs
It is possible that a reviewer will request corrections and/or modifications to your paper. Therefore, it is important that your paper be received on time to allow for this eventuality and still meet the publishing deadline

Pre-symposium Short Courses
On August 24, 2008, prior to the Symposium, three one-day short courses will be offered for FLAC/FLAC3D, UDEC/3DEC and PFC2D/PFC3D. These courses will address common modeling questions raised by code users, and include modeling tips and recommendations. In addition, new features and developments in the codes will be demonstrated. Participants should have a working knowledge of the codes (these are not beginner courses). Registrants will need to provide their own PC (laptop) in order to fully participate. The courses will be run concurrently; however, participants can move between sessions if space is available. Each course is limited to 50 participants.
The below schedule (subject to change) provides a general overview of what will be discussed in the courses. It is also available as a PDF document.
| FLAC/FLAC3D | PFC2D/PFC3D | UDEC/3DEC |
9:00- 10:45 | Grid generation | Bonded particle modeling- Model construction aids, the FISH tools FIST and VLA
- Smooth Joint Logic, a new approach to model joints in a bonded-particle model
| UDEC/3DEC applications- Modeling slope failure: debris flow simulations
- Simulating pore pressure effects in a jointed rock mass
- Dynamic effects on underground pillars and tunnel liners
|
10:45- 11:00 | Coffee Break |
11:00- 12:00 | Structural elements- Connecting structural elements to represent multiple supports
- Simulating pre-tensioning
Stress initialization- Techniques for initializing stresses in non-uniform grids
| Research examples | Running models in UDEC |
12:00- 13:30 | Lunch |
13:30- 15:00 | Groundwater analysis- groundwater modeling advice and considerations
Dynamic analysis- dynamic modeling advice and considerations
| Fluid-particle interaction- Classes of fluid-particle interaction problems
- CCFD (Coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and PFC3D)
- HSBM (Hybrid Stress Blasting Model)

Venue
The Symposium will be held at The Depot Minneapolis, A Renaissance Hotel located at 225 3rd Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55401. Participants are responsible for their own hotel accommodations. A block of rooms at The Depot Hotel has been reserved for Symposium attendees at a special rate. Reservations in this block must be made by July 24, 2008; because rooms are limited - especially since the Republican National Convention will be held in the area the week following the Symposium - we recommend you make your reservation as soon as possible. Once the room block has filled, availability and rates are subject to change. To reserve a room:
