Bulk handling model

These images illustrate a simulation that takes advantage of many of the new features of PFC3D, which is used here to model bulk handling by screw conveyors. The mechanical components of screw conveyors are modeled using general walls: two cylinders as a shaft and casing pipe, and a spiral as a screw.

The kinetic energy of particles is dissipated at each contact by introducing either viscous damping or the hysteretic damping contact model, which is a user-defined contact model (C++/UDM option). These damping schemes are appropriate to free flight or impact simulations, which are seen in many bulk handling processes.

The parametric studies are conducted to examine the performance of the machine or to find the optimum operating condition by changing properties of materials, geometry of particles (arbitrary particle shapes represented with clump logic), or geometry and operating condition of walls.
