Version 4.0 of PFC2D and PFC3D is currently projected for release in the Q1 of 2008. As the projects near completion this page is updated to reflect completed new features that are available for download in the current pre-release version. The following are the major new features of PFC2D/PFC3D Version 4.0.
- 64 bit version (overview)
- Fluid-particle simulation capability by coupling PFC3D to the CCFD (Coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics) code that computes fluid flow through arbitrarily shaped volumes (overview).
- Enhanced Fishtank to support solids-based modeling including genesis of multiple clumped and bonded material regions with particle-size refinement (overview).
- Enhanced clump logic including measurement-logic support (documentation: ClumpLogic.zip [528K]).
- Smooth-joint contact model to simulate the behavior of a through-going interface regardless of the local particle contact orientations along the interface (overview; documentation: SmoothJointDoc.zip [4.0Mb]).
- Help File containing the Command Reference, FISH Reference and Example Applications volumes from the PFC Manual.
The colored items above are complete and available in the pre-release; items in black have not yet been completed.

Please be aware that this pre-release version of PFC has not been fully tested and should be used with caution. Also, new developments are still being made to this version, so save (SAV) files between different versions of this pre-release may not be compatible. This program will run on Windows 98, NT, Me, 2000, and XP. It will not run on Windows 95.

Installation Location
PFC pre-release version 4.0 may be installed to any location; the components associated with it should be installed to the same location. Typically, the default directory on installation is "c:\program files\itasca\pfc2d400" (PFC2D) or "c:\program files\itasca\pfc3d400" (PFC3D). It is recommended that users unzip all pre-release files to this location.
Visual C++ Runtime
The appropriate version of the Microsoft (R) Visual C++ 2005 Runtime Library (2.0.50727.762) is REQUIRED. If not present, on startup the code will return an error message similar to "The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem" (on Windows XP or later) or it will complain of missing DLLs (Windows 2000). A standalone installation for the runtime is available from the updates pages (PFC2D or PFC3D). Note this step need only be performed once and not again for future updates to this pre-release.
Security Key Drivers
The latest security key drivers (version 7.4.0) for the SafeNet key are required. These may be obtained from the updates pages (PFC2D or PFC3D). Note this step need only be performed once and not again for future updates to this pre-release.
