Pre-Release 6.0

The following feature is under development for FLAC Version 6.0. This feature is not implemented in the pre-release at this time.

• Compiled HTML help file (.chm) containing the contents of the Command Reference, FISH in FLAC, and Example Applications volumes from the FLAC Manual.

Available now - the following items are new capabilities available in the pre-release:

• Speedup of double-precision version by converting to Intel Fortran compiler (overview).
• Automatic re-meshing logic for large-strain models including dynamic simulations (overview).

• New and enhanced grid generation tools in the graphical user interface (overview).
• A new constitutive model for modeling friction hardening behaviors of granular soils. (overview).

Please be aware that this pre-release version of FLAC has not been fully tested and should be used with caution. Also, new developments are still being made to this version, so save (SAV) files between different versions of this pre-release may not be compatible. This program will run on Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

Visual C++ Runtime

The appropriate version of the Microsoft (R) Visual C++ 2005 Runtime (2.0.50727.762) — available from the download page — is REQUIRED. If not present, on startup the code will return an error message similar to "The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem" (on Windows XP or later) or it will complain of missing DLLs (Windows 2000). A standalone installation for the runtime is available from the download page. Note this step need only be performed once and not again for future updates to this pre-release.

Security Key Drivers

The latest security key drivers (version 7.4.0) for the SafeNet key are required. These may be obtained from the download page. Note this step need only be performed once and not again for future updates to this pre-release.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

To operate FLAC 6.0 correctly on Windows Vista machines, an update to JRE version 1.6 is required. The JRE is supplied as a self-extracting zip file in the link below. To perform the update, you MUST have administrator privileges on the computer. Please follow these steps:

1. Download the self-extracting file to any location on your hard drive.

2. Run the self-extractor. DO NOT change the location of the "unzip to" field unless you are quite certain you need to put it in a different location. If the location is changed, the .reg file described in the next step will need to be edited to reflect the final location of the files.

3. After the self-extractor finishes, find the file "flac600.reg" in the following location: c:\program files\itasca\shared\jre\1.6. Run the file by double-clicking it. This will create the necessary registry entries for FLAC to properly locate the updated JRE.

Installation Location

FLAC version 5.0 must be installed on your computer in order for pre-release version 6.0 to work properly. The contents of this pre-release update should be unzipped to a location corresponding to the location of FLAC 5.0. For instance, if FLAC 5.0 is installed at "c:\program files\itasca\flac500," the contents of the zip file should be placed in "c:\program files\itasca\flac600."

IMPORTANT!

Be sure to check the "Prerequisites" section to be sure your system is capable of running FLAC. Without the necessary prerequistes, FLAC 6.0 will not run correctly.
