Software: 3DEC: New in 4.1

Redesigned User Interface

The redesigned user interface for 3DEC is more than just a new look. Accelerated OpenGL-based graphics will dramatically increase rendering speeds, particularly when displaying large models. The built-in data file editor with sytax highlighting and one-click execution adds an entirely new way of working with the code. The plotting and range definition controls make creating and modifying model views easier, faster, and more accessible. Expansion of previously available plotting options (such as cutting planes) and the addition of new ones (such as transparency) mean 3DEC's already rich rendering capabilities are greater than ever. The options dialog provides easy access to a wide range of program settings. The images below show some of these changes to illustrate the way the user interface redefines the 3DEC user experience. (Use the "enlarge" option above each image to open a larger version in a new window.)

Range Definition enlarge

Model ranges are specified using the control panel at right. Range elements selected from the list at the bottom are added to the range definition as it appears on the top. The "Attributes" tab for each element in the range provides controls for complete precision in defining the range. As the range is defined, those elements to be removed from view are rendered with transparency to provide a clear visual image of the scope of the range.

Making A Block Plot enlarge

Model plots are created using the control panel at right. All plot items available for display are listed on the "Plot Items" tab in the middle of the panel. When the item is added to the plot, it is added to the list that appears in the upper pane ("PlotItems List"). In this model, a block plot of the intersecting tunnels of a subway station are shown, colored by regions.

Plot Item Attributes enlarge

The display of plot items is easily modified using the "Attributes" tab in the middle of the control panel. In this view, the "Block" item is selected from the "PlotItems List" at top and on it's "Attributes" sheet the view is set to color the blocks by jointed block sections. This operation is performed quickly and easily by setting the "Color By" attribute to "Block."

Further Modification enlarge

Again, with a single click — in this case, on the "Outline" attribute (not seen in the image) — the block outlines are displayed. Note the "View Controls" provide tools for model rotation, translation, and magnification, which may also be performed with mouse (and mouse + keyboard) operations directly on the model view.

Data File Editor enlarge

The data file editor provides syntax coloring to assist in data file editing and creation. In addition, a built-in validation tool will check the command syntax and highlight (seen in yellow) any potential errors. The data file in the editor can be run in 3DEC by clicking on the "Execute" button (shown in green) on the toolbar above.

User Options enlarge

The Options Dialog allows the user to specify a large range of program settings that are saved, meaning 3DEC will always be configured to the user's preferences. As can be seen, the options are split into groupings that include General, Terminal, FISH, Listings, Startup, Configuration, Display, and Movie.
